This Saturday’s UFC Fight Night is one not to be missed, as Edson Barboza who put away former lightweight champion in April will face Gilbert Mendelez.
The event will take place in Chicago with the main event star Holly Holm looking to redeem herself after losing the title to Miesha Tate earlier this year, Holly’s challenger is another female Muay Thai specialist Valentina Shevchenko who reigns from Kyrgyzstan. Holly Holm has let us know she wants to avenge her loss to Miesha Tate whether it be for the belt or not, and a victory here will set up perfectly for a rematch or even better against Ronda Rousey later this year.
Gilbert Mendelez was a dominant Strikeforce champion before his arrival to the UFC, and since then it’s been on a bumpy road. Mendelez has tested positive for banned substances and got himself into one or two wars along the way, most famously with Diego Sanchez at UFC 166.
“Everybody knows I busted up Eddie Alvarez so it makes things interesting.” Melendez told FOX Sports recently.
Mendelez rolls with the Diaz brothers and other Gracie practitioners, which is why Barboza will want to keep this fight on it’s feet and use his height and reach as an advantage. If Barboza is to succeed and get a title shot, it could mean facing fellow team-mate and current champion Eddie Alvarez.
